Largest Audi dealer opens in West London

The world’s largest Audi Centre – West London Audi – is officially being launched with a huge party for the capital’s top glitterati. Among the guests will be Bryan Ferry, Gordon Ramsay, Dominic Cooper, Jamie and Louise Rednapp, Phil Glenister, Keeley Hawes, Rupert Penry Jones, James Cordon, Ronan Keating, Beverley Knight, Davina McCall, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Jackie Stewart.

The imposing new building, which represents a major investment of £45 million by Audi UK, consolidates the brand’s position as one of the global leaders in prestige car manufacturing.

Six years in the planning and execution, the stunning new 190,000 sq ft Audi Centre is prominently located adjacent to the elevated section of the M4. Its seven storeys incorporate three showroom floors capable of displaying as many as 116 cars, and two basement levels housing a 32-bay workshop and extensive parking facilities. The top two storeys are given over to the Audi quattro Rooms – a business and creative complex which operates as a conference centre.

The highly distinctive curved structure conceived by architects Wilkinson Eyre, famous for the design of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, provides an impressive showcase for the fast expanding 33 model Audi range.

The basement levels are an engineering marvel – they are built below the water table level (and the River Thames) and extend on all sides right up to the boundary lines of the premises.

“In its scope, size and complexity, West London Audi is like nothing we’ve built before. It is 100 times more complicated than a normal retail centre,” says Jeremy Hicks, director of Audi UK. “The sheer scale of this project is very emblematic of the increasing significance of Audi not only in the UK but globally.”

The strategically located landmark building is operated by the Sytner Group, a Sunday Times Best Company to Work For, which has 140 prestige franchise outlets across the UK. It will be staffed by 100 personnel and approximately 30,000 customers are expected through its doors in the next 12 months.

In the creation of the vast glass and metal external structure, Wilkinson Eyre has drawn inspiration from nature, art and science to create an exciting and technologically advanced sculptural form. The elegantly sweeping curves are reminiscent of a manta ray fish, and the aerodynamic wing shapes of a B2 Stealth Aircraft. The roof itself is a ‘standing seam’ structure made from aluminium sheets, each approximately 40m in length without any joints.

A dramatic aluminium installation by Gerry Judah, designer of the soaring Audi centennial sculpture at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, dominates inside. Weighing almost a ton and featuring the record-breaking Auto Union Streamliner, the specially commissioned piece is suspended between three floors within the atrium. It took three cranes and two days to install this stunning centrepiece.

The Audi quattro Rooms on levels four and five feature not only a heritage section, displaying many of the innovations from Audi’s 100-year history, but also meeting rooms, exhibition space and a screening room with the very latest 103” Bang & Olufsen screens. Audi selected architect Miguel Beleza to design the two floors to create imposing architectural features that define the venue. Furniture has been provided by Fritz Hansen – the Danish designer furniture company.

After several consecutive record years, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. reports a decrease in worldwide sales for the first six months of the financial year 2009 (which ends 31/12/2009). In spite of the massive economic downturn in Lamborghini´s major markets the company is still among the few car companies maintaining overall profitability.

In the first six months of 2009, turnover reached 156.9 Million Euros, with a decrease of 43.4% compared to the same period of 2008 (277.4 Million Euros). Pre-tax profit was 5.4 Million Euros in comparison to 35.0 Million Euros in the first six months of 2008.

In terms of sales, the company delivered 825 cars: a reduction of 37% compared to the same period of 2008 with sales of 1.309 cars.

As expected, the markets showing the sharpest decline are those economies worst hit by the deep worldwide recession. Consequently, Lamborghini sales volumes saw the most substantial downturn in the USA, falling by 52% from 431 to 207 units sold.

Some markets’ sales figures however, counteract the trend. In Europe, the second largest market, Italy, accounted for 122 units, nearly on a par with the first six months’ performance of 2008 when 130 Lamborghini cars were sold.

Switzerland maintained stability with 49 units sold, compared with 51 units in 2008. The same holds true for France with 37 units sold (43 in the first half of 2008).

Beyond Europe, there are clear signs of sales stability in the Middle East, which presently is the fourth largest market in the world for Lamborghini (61 units sold against 79 in the first half of 2008) and in China, which has achieved a sales growth of 32% (29 units sold in the first half of 2009 against 22 in the first six months of 2008).

Some major European markets showed decreases: Germany down 52.0%, and the UK down 46.6%.

The President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, commented, “As was expected, we are not immune to the global recession. However, I am certain that Lamborghini’s strong global presence and brand appeal, which remains unaffected, will enable us to steer the company through challenging times to achieve new strengths. Our business strategy continues to be driven by two fundamental principles that allow us to react to the present economic situation and preserve the success of our brand. Firstly, we will maintain the profitability of the company, a target confirmed by the results of the first six months of 2009. Secondly we continue our investment into the future with product technology and innovation alongside a firm ecological stance.”

Lamborghini remains with its long-term strategy, with a commitment to announcing at least one new product each year.

The latest examples of this confidence are the launch of the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder, the Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, and the new Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni: the first rear wheel drive Gallardo, celebrating the famous Lamborghini test driver, Valentino Balboni.

Investments into R&D and into reduction of CO2 emissions will continue as planned, resulting in continuing technology and product innovation. The company has recently announced its intention to complete its program of environmental sustainability in record time by presenting new plans which will enable Lamborghini to:

- achieve a 30% reduction, by the year 2010, in the CO2 emissions produced by its factory
- achieve a 35% reduction, by the year 2015, in the CO2 emissions produced by its vehicles

Lamborghini will commit 35 million Euros over the next five years for this purpose.

For the full year 2009, the company is not giving a definitive business forecast due to continuing market instabilities. However, Lamborghini is confident of also attaining a full year profit, thus remaining one of the few profitable companies in the industry.

TOKYO – Nissan Motor Co. will offer a luxury gas-electric hybrid for the U.S. and Japanese markets next year, Japan’s top business daily reported Sunday, as competition intensifies in the green technology.

Nissan’s Tokyo headquarters were closed for the weekend. Automakers are generally tightlipped about specific product plans, but Nissan already has shown prototypes of their hybrid models.

Nissan has fallen behind Japanese rivals Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. in developing its own hybrids but has made no secret of its ambitions to play aggressive catchup.

It now buys hybrid systems from Toyota for the Nissan Altima hybrid but is promising a vehicle packed with Nissan’s own hybrid system by 2010.

Nissan is developing a different kind of battery for hybrids from those used by Toyota and Honda. Nissan officials say their battery is better at providing quicker and more power.

The Nikkei, which did not cite sourcing, said Nissan’s hybrid system will be offered for the luxury Infiniti M, sold as the Fuga in Japan. Nissan plans to expand hybrid offerings to other luxury models and sports cars, the report said.

Nissan officials have said the nation’s third-biggest automaker is working on a bigger hybrid system than Toyota’s popular Prius, the global top-seller among hybrids, and will make hybrid sports cars and luxury models.

Among luxury cars, Toyota already offers various Lexus hybrids, while German automakers Daimler AG and BMW AG are planning hybrids.

In recent months, competition among lower-end hybrids has heated up with a major challenge to the Prius’ dominance from Honda’s hit Insight.

Hybrids deliver better mileage and reduce global warming gas emissions, compared with ordinary cars, because hybrids switch between a gasoline engine and an electric motor to deliver gas-sipping efficiency.

TORRANCE, Calif. – Honda said its new Insight hybrid will be priced under $20,000 when it goes on sale in the U.S. later this month, as the No. 2 Japanese automaker takes aim at eco-friendly bargain shoppers.

American Honda Motor Co. said the 2010 Insight will arrive at U.S. showrooms starting March 24 with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $19,800 for the base LX model. The Hybrid EX, which will include some premium features, will have a base price of $21,300, Honda said.Honda Insight Concept

Honda has said it planned to make the Insight an economical hybrid. The car is expected to compete head-on for hybrid shoppers with Toyota’s Prius, which has long been the best-selling hybrid in the U.S.

1This week, Car and Driver was the first ear to hear Audi’s future plans for its power focussed S4/S5 series. Audi has been actively working to reduce curb weight on its vehicles in order to enhance performance and minimize the use of heavy materials that were popular in the 1990s. The latest trend for the german maker is to “lighten the load” using aluminum in all its lineup, including the new TT which is 70% based on this metal.
With all this dieting, Audi has also decided to make its S4 heart smaller yet still tremendously effective by downsizing from its 2008 4.2 V8, to the supercharged V6, and now a smaller turbocharged four banger for 2014.
Ironically, the Audi S4/S5 of the future will be quicker, lighter and more efficient.

“In 2008, when we won everything: the Constructors’ title, the Riders’ title, the Teams’ title, it provoked a great motivation and reaction from rival riders and factories and they must have all started working to produce a bike capable of beating us,” says Brivio. “We haven’t changed much with our bike, but we have made improvements in important sectors, trying to keep the level of competitiveness high. We’ll see this at the first races and we hope that our bike will be up to the job. I believe it will be.”

Rossi tested the 2009 M1 in the post-season test in Valencia, Spain and again in Jerez, Spain, where he recorded the fasted time among all riders.

“The bike seems better and I was faster than I was with the 2008 version,” says Rossi. “I’m very confident, and anyway we’re only at the beginning of our work and now we must use these months before April to improve the 2009 M1 even more.”

Lorenzo spent much of the last few months training and recovering from injuries suffered in several crashes through the 2008 season.

“They’re not 100% because I’m still missing a little mobility in my ankles, especially in the left one, but little by little they are clearing up,” says Lorenzo. “Many months have passed since the crashes and right now the problems I had with my forearms and my ankles, thanks to the specialists who I am lucky enough to have, the situation is gradually improving and I think that I will be if not 100% then around 95 or 97% before the start of the season.”

A series of crashes marred a promising rookie season that began with three consecutive podium finishes for Lorenzo. The Spaniard’s luck may change in his sophomore season along with his number. Lorenzo will switch to 99 from his usual 48.

Rossi, on the other hand, will stay with his familiar 46 instead of the number 1 plate. As he has done following his previous MotoGP championship seasons, Rossi will stay with the number used by his idol, the late Norifumi Abe, and his father, Graziano Rossi.

Honda hires new Executive

Honda hires new Executive

TOKYO (AP) – Honda has named Takanobu Ito as chief executive to provide fresh leadership to battle a global crisis in the auto industry.

The 55-year-old is a research and development expert with U.S. experience.

Japan’s No. 2 automaker says in a statement today that he replaces 64-year-old Takeo Fukui. Fukui will remain on the board as adviser.

Both Fukui and Ito have said the change at the helm is a message of its determination to turn a new leaf and press ahead with technological innovations to lift Honda’s sagging business.

The change still needs shareholders’ approval at a meeting in June.

Honda’s October-December profit plunged 90%. The automaker is expecting $856 million in profit for the fiscal year ending March 31.

Tuned Exclusive: Honda to participate in Formula 1 season

Reports on the respected industry website crash.net suggest that the Honda Formula One team has been saved and will be on the starting grid in Melbourne when the grand-prix season gets under way on 29 March.

It is believed that Ross Brawn, the principal of the Brackley-based team put up for sale by its Japanese parent company back in December – has circulated an email to staff saying that a deal has been done to secure their future, and that they should begin preparing for the opening race of the season in Australia.

It is also claimed that five sponsors have been found to adorn the side of the car, and though the identity of the engine-supplier is unknown, the McLaren partner, Mercedes-Benz, is strongly believed to be the most likely candidate.

On the driving front, finally, Jenson Button will remain, with the Briton expected to be joined by the last GP2 Series runner-up Bruno Senna, who impressed in testing for the team at Barcelona in Spain late last year, with backing from a portfolio of Brazilian sponsors.
